The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities [UNCRPD] outlines the rights of people with disabilities and provides the guide for government and civil society in ensuring the rights of all individuals labelled intellectually disabled are respected, honoured and ensured.  The UNCRPD was ratified by Canada in 2010. The Government of Nova Scotia was one of the first Provinces to give its consent to Canada becoming a signatory and to consenting to the ratification of the UNCRPD. It marked a very important moment in the disability rights movement and is the foundation of the proposed transformation of the Services for Persons with Disabilities Program in Nova Scotia.
